Simon Longstaff graduated from Dundee University in 1981. Following postgraduate training in Dundee, Sheffield and Moorfields he was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist in Sheffield with special interest in Glaucoma in 1989.
With publications in both cataract and glaucoma subspecialty areas his main interest has been developing efficient ways of handling large numbers of glaucoma patients through the Glaucoma Technician based Sheffield Glaucoma Unit. The Sheffield Glaucoma Unit won the Allergan Glaucoma Achievement Award 2009.
For many years he has served on the BMA Ophthalmic Group Committee and is currently Vice Chairman of this committee. In the past he has been a council member for the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Outside medicine; after successfully racing dinghies at national level for many years, flying and fledgling aerobatics are his main interests.
